Tutorial week 1/2

ESH260 Week 2 f2f tutorial

General intros – of tutor, students – find out their disciplinary/scholarly backgrounds, life experience as in places lived, ….

1. Get to know each other: Global bingo
See handout. Reflect on the great variety in the ways people begin this task.

2. Lecture review

3. The tutorial and lecture framework
Discuss the schedule for the semester.

Also that the topic order may change (depending on off-campus opportunity for site visits in Week 7).

4. Review the assignments, particularly Assignment 1 in detail
a) Making a start on Assignment 1: Think/Pair/Share

Students reflect on learning in SOSE fieldwork from their own experience at school.
Share with one other person.
With larger group – compare and contrast the examples. How do they differ/ how are they similar? What about reactions and memories – are they positive? What was learned?

Compare with what was observed on professional experience placements.

How may the remembered fieldwork be in keeping with contemporary developments in education – and in this learning area in particular?

Plus/Minus/Interesting: Use the PMI to analyse the evidence students produce through their memories of SOSE/fieldwork (or related curriculum area)

b) What kinds of things will students be doing in SOSE?
Read Gilbert, 2004, pp. 56. List all of the things students will be doing as part of SOSE. How does this connect with your experiences of SOSE fieldwork related learning at school?

Step back to explain that what we have been doing could be seen as a first step in an enquiry approach. SOSE students task over the next few weeks is to conduct Inquiry of SOSE as discussed in contemporary literature and policy documents.

Explain what these are – text: Gilbert, Marsh, Reynolds as starting points; Society and History (Tas Curriculum) and similar policies from other states.

5. Week 1 review
Week 1 has been a tuning in phase. How does it relate to SOSE curricula and pedagogies?

Step back to explain that what we have been doing could be seen as a first step in an enquiry approach. The task for students over the next few weeks is to conduct inquiry of SOSE as discussed in contemporary literature and policy documents.

Emphasise texts to use as a starting point – texts: Gilbert, Marsh, Reynolds; Society and History (Tas Curriculum) and similar policies from other states.

5. For Week 3

- Bring along a written memory of society and environment curriculum; read the material on MyLO – particularly the section on narrative in Module 1: Key terms and concepts
